Scope & Sequence Recommendations
When planning your school/district’s roll out, a few things to keep in mind:
- Each year, all classes should start with climate-building lessons from Module 1: School-Connect Foundations (Lessons 1.1, 1.2, 1.7, and 1.9). Consider adding other core and booster lessons from Module 1 as needed (e.g., 1.5, 1.6 and 1.8).
- The lessons within each module are designed to scaffold. All modules start with skill-building and climate-building activities that lead to next-level skills and then a culminating project and module assessment. It is better to complete all the lessons in a module rather than pick & choose different lessons from different modules. Modules can be used in any order based on student needs, but lessons within that module should proceed through lessons 1 - 10.
Advisory Classes Implementation Options
- In YEAR 1 implementation, implementation, all grade levels should complete Modules 1 and 2. These lessons cover many of the essentials for success in school, relationships, work, and life.
- In YEARS 2 & 3 implementation, follow the modules suggested for each grade level in the charts below (grades 6-12, 9-12 or 6-8). The modules are rolled out sequentially with the exception of Module 7: Setting and Achieving Long-term Goals (best for grades 9 or 10) and other reorganizations based on developmental readiness and priorities. Senior classes can peer mentor or select modules based on student need.

Advisory Model Implementation Notes:
- Use booster lesson options in advisory and/or academic classes. Revisit any lessons from previous modules as needed for review (e.g., study skills, emotional management, collaboration skills).
- Use the Integration Guide (link to: https://school-connect.net/sel-integration-guide-preview) to reinforce “S-C Essentials” within classes, athletics, and community outreach.
- Consider using EQ @ Home or School (link to: https://school-connect.net/eq-at-home-or-school-overview) Family Discussions and Activities to encourage parent involvement.

Dedicated Class (e.g., middle school, freshman seminar, and/or senior seminar):
- In SEMESTER 1, cover Modules 1-3 CORE lessons and boosters, the essentials of emotional management, communication/relationship skills, and academic skills & motivation.
- In SEMESTER 2, cover Modules 4-6 CORE lessons and boosters, which builds off previous modules with deeper work in collaboration skills, supporting empathy & inclusion, building relationships and resolving conflicts.
- In SEMESTER 3, cover Modules 7-9 CORE lessons and boosters, which continues to utilize skills learned in previous semesters with a focus on setting & achieving long-term goals, skill-building for mental health and well-being, and managing life in a tech world. NOTE: Students should receive Module 7 no later than 10th grade to start their long-term planning at an optimal time.
- In SEMESTER 4 (for upperclassmen), take a deep dive into the college and career prep lessons. These lessons walk through each step of the college application process and preparing for workplace skills and adulthood.

Tier 2 Intervention (special education, counseling groups, in-school-suspension):
All modules can be applicable and helpful for Tier 2 interventions, but Module 6: Building Relationships & Resolving Conflicts and Module 8: Skill-building for Mental Health and Well-Being may be especially relevant for students who need additional practice in emotional regulation and/or behavior modification. These lessons can work well in small group settings. As with other modules, it is good to start with the early lessons to build trust, rapport, and a supportive climate, and then progress to later lessons in the module.
Academic Integration (Core subjects, sports, & extra-curriculars):
Any CORE lessons and/or boosters can be integrated into regular classes as time allows. Especially given that the CORE lessons are 25-minutes and most boosters range from 5 – 15 minutes, School-Connect topics can be part of regular 50-minute and/or 90-minute classes. We recommend academic class teachers establish predictable routines students can look forward to (e.g., “Fun Fridays with a School-Connect lesson,” starting Mondays with a Get Centered activity, using Get Connected interactive games for regular class climate-builders). If integrating into academics, it’s important to coordinate across subjects and grade levels so students do not receive the same boosters too often in other classes, example:
- English classes could teach Module 2: Improving Communication Skills
- Math classes could use Module 3: Boosting Academic Skills and Motivation
- History classes could use Module 4: Preparing for Group Projects
- Other classes use other modules and/or Get Centered and Get Connected boosters
There are eight core lessons per module plus an optional PBL and assessment. Academic teachers could complete a module by doing approximately one CORE lesson a month and adding lesson extensions and boosters as they have time.
Also important to academic integration is School-Connect’s Integration Guide. This 65-page guide includes reproducible 1-pagers for all core subject teachers, counselors, administrators, and community members with easy tips for integrating “S-C Essentials” (e.g., active listening, problem-solving, emotional management) into regular interactions with students. As with other modules, it is good to start with the early lessons to build trust, rapport, and a supportive climate, and then progress and scaffold to later lessons in the module.
