Module 11 walks with students through the process of moving toward their post-high school career and education pathways. The lessons provide detailed exploration into different higher education options including job training programs, community colleges, 4-year universities, and/or the military. In the new “Speaking from Experience” video series, students will hear directly from college admissions counselors, financial aid experts, military officers, trade school professionals, and students who are going through or successfully completed the college application process.
For students who decide on a 4-year college plan, Lessons 11.3 – 11.7 guide them through 1) researching and deciding on colleges to apply to, 2) writing their college essays, 3) completing their college applications, and 4) applying for financial aid. For many, these involve overwhelming organizational tasks. Just getting started can ease students’ anxiety and create excitement about their future.
Navigating college applications can be daunting, especially for students who will be the first in their family to go to college. These lessons are designed to be shared with parents to help them be better informed and equipped for this complicated multi-step process. Providing resources, time, and support is critical throughout the application process and should be embedded within high school class time. Modules 10 and 11 are ideal for a junior/senior seminar class.
