Most educators, parents, and even teens would agree modern technology (e.g., smartphones, social media, gaming, internet influences) is a significant challenge for education, learning, and mental health. Escalation in levels of loneliness, academic disengagement, and emotional dysregulation parallel the pervasiveness of tech time in daily life. Brain science shows evidence of steady tech use mirroring similar neurotransmitter patterns as addiction.
That said, teens (and adults) love technology! The Internet and all the advantages that come with it is here to stay. The goal of this series is not to try to extinguish tech use, but rather to help students become conscious consumers and aware of how time on tech impacts brain development, attention spans, relationships, and well-being. S-C Module 9 is a culmination of lessons learned in School-Connect Modules 1-8 through the lens of daily tech use. This student-driven series will put students in the driver’s seat with a guide toward navigating healthy tech habits.
What TEEN VOICES videos say…
“I think the reason teens feel more lonely is because they’re on their phones and they’re looking at other people’s lives with other people.
Today they’re just watching life through a screen instead of actually living it.”
