Mod 2 Skill-building and Scaffolding
Communication comprises a set of skills involving visual and verbal elements—how we look, what we do, and what we say. The opening lesson, First Impressions (2.1), captures the impact of our initial meeting with others, when we often make split-second decisions about who they are as people (Willis & Todorov, 2006; Lees, 2012). And how it can be difficult for teens to break through to each other when they are staring at their phone screens and conveying cryptic information about themselves electronically. Reviving Digital Zombies (2.2) explores the upside and downside of high-tech immersion and how to manage it for best use. Left unchecked, excessive use of technology can encourage distracted and addictive behavior (Small & Vorgan, 2008), and lead to depressive symptoms (Davila, et al., 2012) and a decrease in empathy (Konrath, et al., 2011).

What PARENTS say…
“[This class] offers real world, practical information with opportunities to implement and see results. From handshakes and making eye contact, the class lessons and "hands on" scenarios have led to some very interesting conversations at home. I wish my employees had this class in high school - my life would be much easier.”
